I always assumed hiring managers did a quick, informal online search of applicants to check for any massive red flags. But I recently ran into an employer explicitly stating they conduct a formal social media background check as part of their screening. Has anyone else come across this? Is it becoming the new standard, or did I just find an unusually intense company?

I feel like it is the new normal. So much of our personal lives are out on social media that it is another way for employers to see who they are really looking at. It can also be used for our Benifits as well. Turn the table and research them as well. Is this the type of company you want to work with?

I used to work for an airline and during training, you sat down in a class for security training and the airline security team would their own vetting and print off your entire online presence for everything they could find.

It was quite humbling when you see it as a physical presence but some had alarmingly large compilations.

Makes you think carefully about what you post and where.
