Writing articles, speaking and networking establishes you as an expert in that field. You have to get in front of the people who can send you the work and ask for it, making a case for why you should be the go-to (being an expert is a good reason!). I know, much easier said than done.

Are you in a field where identifying possible matters before the clients do makes sense? That can help you pitch first. Are you proactively asking to pitch?

I don’t but I’ve seen rainmakers work and most of them do this. But it needs to be in an area of law where it makes sense. If you’re in eg investigations you’re not going to know when a possible matter is coming up. In other fields you can add a lot of value by identifying potential issues and proactively offering your services.
Networking for a year is nothing. Those efforts should have started 10 years ago. Writing and speaking are (arguably) necessary but not sufficient to win clients.
To get client(s), someone has to know you and vouch for you. Current clients can do this for you, as can current partners especially if they’re near retirement themselves.

I am also an NEP with zero traction from writing articles, speaking on panels, and attending conferences.
