I am a social person outside of work but my job role has always been technical. I am trying to prepare myself for a management role (either in my current job or through a career change) but have no prior experience managing. Does anyone have tips for preparing for such a transition (books to read, ways to get prior experience, a mindset to embrace)? I have previously been told I'm a different person at the office as i am out socially, which is why I am concerned about the transition

In the current company I work for, it seems like in order to get promoted, you need to not only do what's within your job description well, but also do things that are past your job description so that they see your interest & understanding of other avenues, and THEN they'll promote you to a management role. Is that the standard way of getting promoted in all fields? Doing your job plus more until youre promoted to just do the 'more'?
