Anyone have experience working in sales for a startup? What are things to consider? Got a recruiter contacting me about an open position very similar to what I do now, at a startup.

I work in sales at a VC backed startup. Consider total comp, my structure is 50% base 50% bonus. However quota has been hard to hit this year for the whole team so it's very lean. Ask what % of team is hitting quota this year.

How much support you need (and get) to close deals is important. If very technical solution then a really good solutions engineering / sales support role is really important.

Also.what is the market like? And also what is company YoY sales growth? ~40%+ YOY growth is very good and could be considered "high growth". Unless it's a brand new company and then they may have crazy numbers like 200% and hard to tell if sustainable.

Good luck!

Thank you, this is extremely helpful!

I interviewed with a startup recently and passed. It can be a great opportunity, but they often don’t have set quotas, or any tools or processes in place to help you. If you’re really set, it could be an awesome adventure. But I personally wanted a more stable sales job.

Hi, I have started a business as an independent agent. The only expense I had to spend is just a one time lifetime membership with my brokerage company which took care of my virtual office, website, and excellent support and training, my license, and my E&O. COMPANY has been in business since 1848, with a financial strength rating of AAA with Moodys, AM Best, and S&P 500 so they are a solvent company that delivers. For 2020 alone NLG has paid over 50 million dollars in claims because of COVID and our brokerage company increased sales over 40% even during the pandemic. Our brokerage company is the #1 broker for NLG. Our PRODUCT is unlike and other, it’s robust and has solutions for every challenges we face in life, not just death. So far as an agent it has allowed me to work remotely from home, become a part of a teams supporting each other, work part time and still got paid what I was getting working full time. A certified field trainer was assigned to help me every step of the way, and with the training available it constantly give us tools and strategies to execute our goals and be successful.

I wouldn't have nearly as many issues with conservative principles if they weren't so hypocritical in how they enact them.

I'm not opposed to lowering taxes, smaller government, and respecting individual rights, but they simultaneously support bailing out big businesses, expanding church and state, and massive deficit spending to pay for dumb wars and tax loopholes for hedge fund managers.

I'd rather see our government provide food, healthcare, and shelter than any of the above things.

The outdated information had led me to believe a prime candidate was out of range. Aside from incompetence, can anyone think of a reason why HR might have withheld information about the pay bands? I assume mgrs see the full monty when it comes to pay...right?

My company covers in depth results each week, including meetings set/attended, wins, revenue, retention etc. I feel as if evaluating in such depth is detrimental to the psyche, as you never get to “ride the high.” In addition, some weeks are simply slower than others, and it’s not always representative of what the results at the end of the period or quarter will be. Is this not a big deal, and I’m I placing too much importance on it? Or is it beneficial to review results less frequently?

Fellow enterprise tech sales fish, I’m interested to hear your perspective. I’ve been in a rut lately and seriously considering leaving sales. I think it’s primarily fueled by one thing:
After a 6 mo cycle I closed a large deal (4x the average deal size) prior to receiving delayed 2022 comp plans. The deal counts as a 2022 deal. On last years comp plan it would’ve paid out at 10%. This year it pays out at a measly 4%.

How do you/have you navigated your way through and out of these situations?

Lately, I've been hearing a lot from my peers about how sales isn't a real profession.
I work at a tech startup and it mostly comprises developers. They can't stop emphasizing their importance in the food chain and I can't figure if I'm too humble or they're too arrogant.
This yapping comes from people I've known since college. I have successfully blocked all such negativity but wanted to know if anyone here has faced such scenarios.
P.S: I've already accepted an offer above my expectations
