I would go valuations or FP&A.
FDD is not strategic or forward looking. In a very simplistic sense, it's glorified accounting and excel formatting. It only covers the diligence part of the deal process, so you aren't doing any modeling work or really any finance at all. Most people use FDD to pivot again.
Accounting advisory is technical accounting, which isn't my thing, but if you can avoid the accounting change work (like rev rec and lease memos), the M&A integration work can be interesting.
Valuations and FP&A have a much bigger impact on strategic initiatives. FDD and AAS are more on the compliance side (not as much as audit or SOX, but still related to compliance). FDD is often a "check the box" because the PE firm has already done their research and made their decision. They just bring in "the accountants" (that's what they call FDD employees) as a final check on earnings. AAS revolves around compliance with accounting standards like IFRS conversion or rev rec.
All are great careers so you really need to determine your personal goals.
Thanks for the response.
As far as the transition from FDD to Corporate Dev, were financial modeling skills discussed? Based on roles I’ve seen posted it seems that most roles are looking for IB/Deal Flow roles and have an emphasis on modeling skills.
Based off your list your should first determine if you still want to be client facing or not. If no, then the obvious choice is FP&A.
Client facing does not bother me.
When looking 5-10 years down the road, I’m hoping to be in a strategic, decision making position.
With all the opportunities presented (and some recruiter Kool-Aid) I was hoping to get a little further insight into the different paths.
