I loathe tax, I want to work to live not live to work. Switching fields means starting all over again. I feel torn. Anyone have success stories? Advice?

Same boat! I despise tax, and frankly accounting. I’m 1 year in and have no idea what my next move should be.

Go into tax tech. 53 hours was the most I've ever worked so far in a week.

Get an MBA from a quality institution so you can still leverage your past experience.

At the end of the day you have an accounting degree. At some point you’re going to be working with numbers or you are completely starting over. We aren’t saving lives, that’s the nature of the job.

I actually genuinely enjoy tax, but I'm 100% with you on everything else. Trying to stick it out long enough to make senior, but I'm almost a year in and miserable already

Go into recruiting

I was in the same boat. Left Big 4 tax for a different Big 4 consulting practice. No regrets and much better balance. Accounting degrees & CPA are marketable even if you’ve only done tax previously. If you’ve already recognized that you hate it, make the jump while you’re still young and aren’t pigeonholed yet.

Decided that I’m leaving audit today. Trying to understand the full range of opportunities in forensics. Will have my CPA and CFE. So far, I understand that there are client-serving firms like FTI and then the B4 will have forensics arms as well. What are some other forensic accounting roles? Pros and cons? Better than audit? Honestly just looking to learn anything.

I’m a first year that’s inching toward second year. Partners in my group say “sometimes getting thrown into the deep end is the best way to learn.” However, I feel so lost. I feel like saying the above is just an excuse for not wanting to take the time to actually teach new associates.

Hi all
I started out as a graphic designer. Worked for about 4yrs in different roles. Then i started a digital design role for 2 yrs and then made my transition into ux. i have been in a ux role for 5 years. But i want to steer my career towards something more creative. Like in 5-10 years I wouldn’t want to be a specialist or a ux director. I d like to be an art director or creative director. I love branding & marketing but also product. Would love something that allows me to do both?

I left Audit at a midsize firm to join KPMG erp implementation consulting about 6 months ago. So far they seem to only want to staff me on projects with a heavy focus on technical accounting and audit. Spoke to a lot of others who have left and seems like being pigeonholed or staffed on projects not related to the actual core work of the practice is the common reason. I've been on the fence about whether I should stay and hope to be staffed on better projects in the future or leave soon...

Have you ever taken a career slow down? I am feeling burnt out from COVID and the incremental responsibilities thrown my way over the last 5+ years. I feel like my health has deteriorated. I like my company, but I want to do less. I don’t need to be a HR Director, CHRO, etc. With a career slowdown, I am prepared for a lower compensation and would want decent benefits. Any lessons learned or success stories about career slowdowns?

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)
