Same boat! I despise tax, and frankly accounting. I’m 1 year in and have no idea what my next move should be.
Come to the IRS and get your life back while doing less tax work
Go into operations management or consulting or teaching.
any advice on how to leverage tax experience trying to go into operations management or consulting?
Go into tax tech. 53 hours was the most I've ever worked so far in a week.
Get an MBA from a quality institution so you can still leverage your past experience.
At the end of the day you have an accounting degree. At some point you’re going to be working with numbers or you are completely starting over. We aren’t saving lives, that’s the nature of the job.
I actually genuinely enjoy tax, but I'm 100% with you on everything else. Trying to stick it out long enough to make senior, but I'm almost a year in and miserable already
Go into recruiting
I was in the same boat. Left Big 4 tax for a different Big 4 consulting practice. No regrets and much better balance. Accounting degrees & CPA are marketable even if you’ve only done tax previously. If you’ve already recognized that you hate it, make the jump while you’re still young and aren’t pigeonholed yet.
