I’d also reach out to as many solo practitioners/small shops as you can and make sure they know you’re available. Your local bar association may have a solo practitioner committee or otherwise be able to put you in touch with some (also google, law school alumni lists, etc). I used to work for a small lit firm that would routinely bring on lawyers to handle a single or small number of cases, draft discrete motions, and the like

Why not run your own shop why you’re in between? It’s better to join a new place with a few clients instead of zero clients anyway.

You could look into legal nonprofits to volunteer with or other volunteer opportunities where you can utilize your legal skills or even volunteer at events hosted by the State Bar. It’d be a good resume builder while you are looking for work and you can network with other volunteer attorneys at the events.

I would update this post to include (at a minimum) your area(s) of practice and location. It's hard to offer useful advice without knowing this information.

That makes sense. I am in the DC area and have mostly tax and general corporate experience.

I’m my partners only associate and I went on parental leave two weeks ago. I feel horrible for leaving him to handle our cases alone, but am trying to focus on my wife and new baby. That being said, should I still offer to handle minor matters that come in to ease the workload off my boss? He’s been super cool during my entire leave, so I don’t feel pressured to one bit.

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
