I am female and have been a “Design Thinking” consultant for 2 years. Just landed in this app and now trying to figure out how to get most out of it beyond getting salary info. Any advice? Thanks!

To go back to the question, I find roughly four categories of potential value from this app. 1) yes, salary info, firm policies, hotel codes etc. 2) hilarity and/or mild offense at the trials and tribulations of traveling consultants 3) Advice on Tumi bags and other accessories and 4) very occasionally, a brilliant and insightful discussion on a Consulting trend, a professional development question, or a navigating-the-firm question. I generally come for the entertainment, but I stick around for those occasional gems

What does “I am female” have to do with anything?

like

Consultant 1, just another fancy, mystified, and almost useless “methodology” invented by our consulting industry. On client side, it’s usually the most uncreative people who advocate it. Sorry for being cynical but that’s how I really feel...

like

@A1 - that’s iterative development, not design thinking. The issue is that high quality, professional qualitative research requires extreme rigor and skill, and is the foundation of design thinking. And since most consultants aren’t trained in it and it’s relatively easy to fake, design thinking looks mushy.

like

Can you explain design thinking please. Every definition I've seen is vague and nonspecific

like

@A1 not wrong, per se, but you are describing a tool - prototyping (and DT / agile are usually complementary) whereas DT is really closer to a human-centered scientific method with a chunk of intuition and creativity embedded. Are you relentlessly focused on your users? DT can uncover existing problems via research and stories and test creative solutions. It's about getting close to your people, and doing it well is really hard. On one hand, I like that there's now a word for the discipline and people know what it is and wanna use it. On the other, I don't like that people are learning on the fly not really respecting that it requires work and talent to do well.

PWC1 hit it on the head. That is why I am here also.

like

But what is it supposed to be? It's described like thinking about what you want to achieve before starting but i assume there's more to it. It's hard to see the difference from regular thinking

like

@C1 - it’s user and story driven approach. The issue is that doing it well requires expertise and experience, but now since it’s “cool”, everyone is saying they use it without a whole lot of rigor.

like

I was initially told about FB by my firm as a new hire. Can't speak to "design thinking" but I've taken the rather simple approach of asking questions when I'm on here, and the answers have helped.

like

Definitely not invented by our consulting industry. Dates as far back as the 60s, only beginning to augment Consulting recently

like

@D1: I think that design thinking is inherently non-rigorous. It is like making something half way then taking a step back to consider if it works. When you realize it doesn’t, you go in a totally different direction

like

@D1: my understanding was that iterative development was more about small steps and tweaks while following an overarching process that remains unchanged. Design thinking would be iterative, but relies on sharp divergence from the overarching process typically associated with iterative implementation. I likened it to bracketing with prototypes to discover what the real problem is. Is that wrong? I wasn’t taught this formally.

@D1: thanks for taking the time to explain. It’s not something I deal with regularly and I feel like I now have a better understanding to bring to the table when it comes up next

Is negotiating offers the norm now? I’ve been at my company awhile and at the time I was hired they said they don’t do negotiations, take it or leave it and they’d offer the next person. I do believe we renegotiate now, however I’m not sure if it’s the rule, the exception, or somewhere in the middle?

Got an offer for SE III at a large tech company. Product I'd be working on interests me and I think I could grow more than in my current role.

Currently I make 180k base and have ISO/RSUs @ startup (60k/yr worth on paper, but won't be worth anything for a few years, if at all).

The offer is:
Base: $166,500
Target Bonus: 10% ($16,650)
RSU: 120k total (30k/yr)

Thoughts on offer? Should I counter?

Additionally there's a yearly target RSU bonus about equal to the cash bonus. Thoughts? 4.5 YOE
