“Comparison is the thief of joy”

likefunnysmart

I'd agree, but I think it should be the foundation of gratitude. The problem is that we most often compare ourselves to those doing better than us instead of to the millions (or should I say billions?) who are worse off.

like

47k student loans and 3k credit card. I've paid off around 30k in loans so far but damn it's depressing

like

Same here

like

Don’t bother comparing your net worth. It’s a waste of time. Here’s the summary: somebody is going to be in a vastly better situation and somebody is going to be vastly worse. I just saved you the sadness of knowing actual numbers.

likeupliftinghelpful

Yeah bruh! Hella student loans over here 😎

likeupliftinghelpful

Turning 24 next month, net worth of 5k currently, would be higher if I didn’t have an obsession with cars 😅

likefunnyuplifting

What is net worth really. Total cash in bank - loans? For people with no property/ equity?

like

Yea when I was in my early 20s I was probably about 50. Then went to business school and that dropped to like 0 or less. Just turned 33 and right about 750k

likehelpful

I’m not -50 but nowhere near 100k. My take on it is we are all in different situations; I have a bunch of student loans and medical bills along with a not so great salary. Also live in NYC. The 100k person lives with their parents and other (crap) stuff like that which is their own choice

likeupliftingfunny

I had a mentor once tell me never to compare your Chapter 9 to someone’s Chapter 3. It never does you any good

likesmart

35, -20k..tough life

likehelpful

This doesn’t seem unreasonable if someone went to business school later or did a PhD and had a low pre-grad school salary.

36 and -$450k net worth (including spouse). I feel you. Student loans can be tough.

like

I went to b-school. My wife went to medical school. Got another ~4 years before she makes doctor money. So our NW isn’t going to change much until then

Thanks for making me feel somewhat better OP

like

I am 30 and have -10k net worth!! Stop comparing! A lot of peoplr in worse situation than you!

like

Ignore it all...so much context is often left out...such as live with parents, or my fav I have a trust fund with monthly disbursements, and/or went to a state school, etc. all of these are positives but often left out of a net worth post. Comparing your consultant income to the national median you’ll feel better about the student loans and the ROI sky rockets over time

likesmart

35 and approximately -30k€ so yay

like

Only those of us who come from affluent families or at least families that could have taught you how to manage money.

like

29 here, -$130k in the hole... Student loans and my divorce got me hurting. Aiming to be back in the black in the next 2 years

like

How much was the divorce? Is this legal fees or alemony?

I started in consulting at 31 with -$120k net worth following an MBA and a divorce.

That was 6 years ago (almost to the day). I think I'm worth $600k ish now without compromising my lifestyle but with a lot of financial discipline and having made good investments.

like

Thanks.

Technically if your student loans are Federal, they're forgiven if you die. So there's that

I joined pwc last month, and absolutely hating it here. Each weekend has been working, 12-15 hours work day is minimum expectation. And there's extreme hierarchy, where even after you spend 24 hours working on something, the director decides he wants something completely different and you delete and restart. (Note that you request them to review and give their pov earlier on, but they never take the time out)

I love international tax (in core) and don’t mind compliance at all but it’s been nearly 100% of what I do. Any ways of balancing out with more structuring/planning?

Some background: there’s only 3 of us IT locally and with the departure of our SM, the little structuring/planning work I do see will probably dry up when they leave. Do I network with other bigger offices to pick up that kind of work?

Hi friends,

I'm a new joinee in MSFT.

People in my team they don't come with me for breaks. (They blame the timings are different since they sit in crits but i don't think so because they have their own group of friends to go with)

Secondly, when my team members see me in cafeteria we expect they'll sit with us but people here are being rude they directly go and sit with their friends they don't call you to join. ( atleast they could have said they are accompanied)

Additional Posts in Consulting

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. It's gotten to the point where I am not even asked about the lack of a degree on my resume. Personally though, it bothers me. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)
