I face clients all the time as a freelancer. No big deal. Technically, we are on staff for the time we are there. Plus, I’ve been a producer for 20 years and have seen them all. I know how to tame the beast. Lastly, who else is going to explain an idea or a production as succinctly as a creative or a producer?
Good point. Maybe they keep you on longer bc you were great on the pitch. The one thing I love about freelance: we don’t get sucked into the politics. I’ve been kept on longer bc the clients loved me. Not a bad thing. More $$$ in my pocket.
I always wondered this as well, esp as of late my agency severely misjudges how long a freelancer should stay on a business, or tries to sub in an FTE who just doesn’t have the same skillset… if I were the client I’d find it very confusing when the team structure is constantly shifting.
Not to mention the quality of the work. Usually the freelance teams are super skilled and the internal teams are fine
Many clients do know. We get that all the time- show me the real team who will be working on my business.
It’s no different than them constantly presenting a “team” at the picture, only for none of those folks to be on the day to day business once the inks dry.
It’s been normalized, especially in an era where so much of the work is project based. In the 1920’s, 30’s & 40’s, motion picture studios were all full time staffers, including the actors, directors, makeup, carpenters, you name it. Starting in the 1950’s and the advent of TV, the studios started going to project based hire, and it’s been heavily that way for a long time now. This is where advertising has been going for the past 25 years.
Wow, I feel like I just went on the great movie ride at universal studios, without having to go on the great movie ride at universal studios. Thanks for that walk down memory lane. If I close my eyes tightly will you take me back to the Appalachian coal mining industry, circa 1890? And whatever you say, I’m gonna picture it in the voice of Morgan freeman.
Lol, this is the way you’re worried about agencies biting themselves in the ass? Have you seen the way they conduct their business in general?
i mean just one of many things
