I am grappling with understanding the role of a program manager vs program specialist or SME. I thought that PMs were supposed to focus on operations and logistics while SMEs or specialist bring content knowledge. Am I mistaken? At my current job I feel like I lack the subject expertise but I'm not a specialist so should I feel "bad" about it?

In my experience, PMs should have some cursory knowledge of the field that they are working in… enough to get around and not have to google every word someone says. Other than that, you consult with the SMEs for more in depth knowledge on those subjects. Although knowledge in the field you work as a PM isn’t generally required, I think it would be difficult to really manage a project well without some level of the basics. That’s my opinion as an SME though.
The more successful PMs that I have worked with have been around for a while and have slowly acquired knowledge as they worked on more projects, and when I am consulted by them, there’s a much deeper conversation that happens.

DO YOU JUST ASSUME THE COST OF YOUR MARKETING ACTIVITIES? I am looking to allocate their cost in the marketing budget in a way that won't rely on several layers of assumptions. How do you reliably estimate the cost of different marketing activities (email, social, web, etc) when you don't have specific people or tools allocated to each function and costs are spread across many channels? Ads seems the easiest, but even then there's time and overheads... I've been looking for a reliable model.
