I’ve been in your shoes. I ended up quitting my job after realizing how badly burnout had affected my mental health—especially because I hadn’t spoken up for myself sooner. Since then, I’ve transitioned into web content management and user experience, which I enjoy so much more.
What finally pushed me to leave was sitting down and listing every single project I had worked on, along with all the extra roles I had taken on. It hit me that I was not only doing my own job but also picking up the slack of a graphic designer, product manager, project manager—and even covering tasks that were supposed to be handled by my male colleague, who, to make things worse, was being paid more than me. That was my breaking point.
Thankfully, I had savings to fall back on, so I left and took the time to update my resume, reflect on all the roles I had juggled, and figure out which ones I truly enjoyed. That clarity helped me move forward.
If you haven’t done this yet, I highly recommend making a master list of all your responsibilities and accomplishments. Add them to a document and save it as YourName_Resume_Master. Then, drop it into ChatGPT and ask something like:
"Based on my resume and experience, what roles would I be a strong fit for and potentially enjoy? What other industries might I explore?"
You might be surprised by the new paths that open up.
Thank you so much for this, it sounds like you went through EXACTLY what I'm going through right now. I don't really have any "coworkers" that aren't management (I guess I'm technically management too lol) the CEO makes SO much money and can definitely afford to hire more people or at least pay me enough to not be living paycheck to paycheck. I am definitely going to take your advice as while I have been applying to jobs it seems like a lot of digital marketing manager positions are the same thing (doing the work of an entire team rather than managing the work of a team).
You could earn double your salary, but also double the responsibilities. I’ve probably been in marketing longer than you were born. I’ve had both great and lousy experiences. It all depends on where you land.
Where you are now is not permanent. On a positive note, you know what you don’t want in a job and experience has taught you signs to look for in your future jobs. Also think about what you enjoyed about the work. Finding jobs that offered more of those experiences is what kept me going for 30 years. If you can’t think of anything positive, then explore other options.
What’s nice is that you have a job for now to keep you afloat while you look for what you want to do! Start setting up coffee chats and networking until you find something that excites you!
