I make it a rule to not refer anyone that I haven’t worked with in some capacity. In fact, referrals bias toward this approach, with a question asking how a referring Googler knows the candidate. I can’t speak for other Googlers.
I can understand your situation, and also I don’t think it’s the best use of your time to expect referrals from coffee chats (at least not from a single chat). They should be primarily informational and also a tool to develop professional relationships over time. If you are are genuine in getting those two things from them, then you’ll be more successful at getting those referrals from them.
Thank you both for the advice. I actually just managed to get a referral for a job I’m a great fit for! Do you think it’s still worth trying to find members on the team and reach out for chats before landing a screening? Fingers crossed I get one!
Use your current companies alumni network, there’s bound to be someone who now works at Google.
I am asking variations of those questions, but yeah I always ask for hear about their path. I reach out to someone with a similar path as me and ask for their advice of what I could do to better stand out.
I think due to the risk of the hiring an unknown quantity, referrals are necessary to get a higher probability of getting an interview. Do you work on projects that let's you interface with Google employees? XWF typically won't help with referrals but that referral's weight also depends on that person's relationship with the HM (e.g., I accepted an offer (start date later this month), but I referred a coworker to the HM. The HM requested his resume).
Gotcha. Out of curiosity, what is motivating you to focus on joining Google now vs another company? Can you get hired by an organization that works with Google members or join a company, such as Apex, that is part of Google's extended workforce (xwf), which has a lower bar of entry?
