That’s the way the cookie crumbles. Don’t take it personally. But sometimes if you’re feeling like this it may be time to start job searching if you are trying to advance quicker
I feel for you OP. 9 months ago it was announced company wide I was stepping into a CoLeadership role with my peer. We started transitioning into the job together taking over from our boss in January. In May, our boss changed and the new guy announced he wanted a singular leadership model. Not only was I demoted (back into my current job), but I was told in a group meeting with my old boss, my new boss, and my peer (who was my previous colead). I had to ask and clarify, and it was confirmed, my peer was to be my new boss. All three of us who had been working the transition were blindsided. It’s been three months. I am actively looking. I don’t think I will ever forget that feeling of public shame and humiliation.
Absolutely!
Please fix your resume and exit. Do not stay at that company.
I’m sorry, glad he found something better.
I was wondering if I had momentarily blacked out and made this post myself. I’m sorry that’s happening to you. It’s never fun to be a part of this type of politics. What is your gut telling you to do?
Did your company go through an acquisition? If so, this is very typical. I've gone through it myself. I stuck through and enjoyed the ride for another 6 months but found a better opportunity outside. What I realized is, you can use this as a huge advantage. Since you got 'demoted', I assume you still have the same $$ with less responsibilities. I would take this opportunity to work less and not stress about work. If possible, don't quit but look for a second job and earn more money while staying with your current job.
Right that’s exactly what you should be doing. Don’t leave until you find something but leave as soon as you find something good.
Friendly reminder that you are not your job ❤️
I got demoted too with the disguise as a “restructuring.” It sucks. If you are unhappy look somewhere else. You need to feel valued.
Sorry this happened to you. I have been there. It doesn’t feel good. Sometimes it is just the result of the capacity of a higher up. They restructure to free their own calendar. Take some time to cool off and assess the situation and then do what is best for you.
I’m so sorry this happened to you. I definitely have been there. Are there any opportunities in this restructuring to pivot? I was unable to see an opportunity in my situation because I was so focused on what was done to me. But I offer a suggestion to focus or find some positivity even if it means going elsewhere
Opportunity for change! Don't stick around where you aren't valued. Polish up your resume and find something new.
This exact thing happened to me during the pandemic. I ended up leaving and now work in a lower level role but at a new company that truly values me. I hope you have the same luck.
I appreciate the responses, everyone. Helpful. Thanks for letting me vent.
This happened to me too, I didn’t have the same motivation and ultimately left the company. Good luck!
I voluntarily took a demotion from a toxic situation. It’s hard on the ego but am at the same pay and & wanted & valued. You’ll have to decide if this was based on your capabilities & growth potential or on other, criteria. If the former, take time to get your house in order & consider if you can get past the hurt & find your own value in the new work; if the latter, enjoy the lull, excel in the role, then let folks know you’re still interested in being in an elevated position.
I was demoted as well. They brought in a male for my replacement without my knowledge. I’ve just been doing the same work as everyone else . Left out of a lot of side meetings. I’m starting a new job with a different company in August and they won’t know until I leave. 🤷🏽♀️
I am sorry to hear about that. Is it your first time dealing with this situation?
Are you part of a company that just went through a merger?
Leave. Now.
Hey, sorry wasn’t trying to be funny or dismissive. Your situation sucks. But it’s not likely there will be a turnaround so suggesting you cut bait sooner rather than later. Work where you are valued and appreciated and have advocates. There are so many other opportunities. Take a look and see.
Or is there new leadership?
I'm so sorry. I've been there. It stinks.
