Living in an apartment means some noise is inevitable, but it doesn’t mean everyone has to tolerate all noise at all times. “Normal hours” are subjective - what’s reasonable to you at 7:30 am might be disruptive to someone who works late shifts, has a baby, or simply has different sleep patterns.
Apartment living requires mutual respect, Each person needs to make a fair effort to minimize unnecessary disturbances for others.
Growing up helps as well. This is adulting.
Well said. The mention of the slipping a note under the door made me 🙄 extra hard.
Your neighbor came to you first, directly (by way of door note, lol) instead of going to building management or even filing an official noise complaint. This is consideration and maturity. Taking issue with that? I mean, grow up.
The structural issue is americas paper thin wooden construction
My neighbor always has noise all day and is it annoying while I'm working and want quiet, yes, but I don't say anything or pop in noise cancelling headphones. What I do have a problem with is when it gets so loud my walls are literally shaking and items have fallen off of shelves. I will say something every single time. Our leases also say that we can't have noise disturbamce that affects the quality of life of your neighbors. And honestly, when his crap gets loud I literally cannot be in my own place. I didn't complain to him or my landlord directly but when I tried to break my lease and move, my landlord asked why and I was honest. My neighbor is a pain in general so he threatened to kick him out and it's been better ever since.
That’s understandable but I assure you, it’s never that loud. I just play music at a reasonable volume for a little while here and there. The bass isn’t thumping and no floors or walls are shaking.
Maybe they just don’t like your taste of music??
I had to live next to a woman in a high rise who loved Bollywood and Indian music and played it too loud and all day long. I couldn’t enjoy my own music and it made my living room a place I hated to be in. I was sequestered to my bedroom where I couldn’t hear it. It was awful. Her stereo was also against the wall we shared and the Highrise metal and thin walls amplified her music into my space.
I'm on the spectrum. Some people may prefer less noise because of sensory issues/overstimulation from noise. Some people also just may be trying to work, study, relax, read, or may even have a baby that needs to sleep.
I understand that. I just find it odd that a tenant expects complete quiet from their neighbors and yet makes a ton of noise themselves, especially late at night.
Their noise has woken me up in the middle of the night. It also disturbs me mid-day when I’m working.
The attention to noise needs to go both ways.
It’s so bizarre to me. I wasn’t going to make any kind of thing about them being loud at midnight on an almost nightly basis but god forbid the music gets kind of loud in a Netflix show I’m watching at 9 pm.
They slipped a note under my door about it.
Like…??
