Nothing wrong with encouraging BIPOC applicants because of historical reticence to hire from those communities, but phrasing it like this isn’t right. A few stumbles on the way to equality are inevitable though.
Yeah that sounds about right.
Nah this is fine.
If you were to replace “BIPOC” with “White”, imagine the outrage. Personally, I think it’s completely fine for a recruiter to only proceed with qualified BIPOC candidates… but including it in the job listing is a bit damning
*outrage
Couldn't you say "Looking for a freelance Brand copywriter with experience in multi-cultural/BIPOC campaign work" etc?
Obviously the people who likely are best suited for this work would be BIPOC, but maybe in a less like, "Hey BIPOC creatives, yes, you! Come work with us before we have a PR nightmare on our hands!"
agree!!!!!!
I think legally you can “encourage” certain people to apply but can’t say you are only hiring one type of person if that makes sense.

That's the language I've seen too.
This is illegal…but we have to do SOMETHING to get more POC into advertising. Legally, that means diversifying the candidate pool, not restricting.
Lmao so glad I left the wankery of the agency world. I work with lawyers and paralegal often. Race is a protected class.

This is completely fine. The reason that there are pushes to get more BIPOC talent is because the hiring process is biased against people of color/minorities in the first place WITHOUT explicitly saying “looking for white XYZs”. You have to take the context of systematic racial/gender/etc biases into consideration before claiming that this isn’t “ethical”.
Well weed is still illegal in some places, so some laws are idiotic to say the least, including the one that would restrict the above job posting
It's 2021; this is beautiful
The way that is written is “technically” discrimination. What recruiters are saying now is that “to further the XYZ company’s ongoing diversity and inclusion efforts, POCs and minorities are highly encouraged to apply”.
This is perfectly fine.
This post and chain proves that VERY few people, even individuals in a left-leaning industry, understand WHY we need more initiatives to recruit BIPOCs. And it’s because even with laws advocating for equality, white professionals are still more likely to get hired, promoted, and move forward in their careers than BIPOCs
What would’ve made the language better?

I actually saw a job advertised on twitter that specified the company was looking for black women, "ideally disabled", applicants. I think encouraging diversity is brilliant but in the UK at least it's illegal to discriminate based on protected characteristics (there are some exceptions, for example for actors). You more commonly see job adverts include a line about being an equal opportunity employer, or say they "actively encourage" applicants from diverse backgrounds.
Idk at first glance it can be perceived as exclusive HOWEVER maybe this particular job is working on a client who markets to BIPOC in which case that would be reason enough to be searching for someone with that background so that they can bring their knowledge and expertise to the job. For example, I did an animation job recently where the lead character was African American and we needed to show her getting out of bed in the morning with messy hair - and having an African American person on the team who could speak to what that hair needed to look like and how it needed to be animated was incredibly helpful and made a huge difference. So long story short, sure it’s possible that this particular recruiter might just be trying to “check a box” but it could also be that they not only see the value in having a BIPOC on their team but also need them for a particular job. And even if is just to get more BIPOC in the door, we need more of those voices anyway so I don’t see the harm.
