I feel like so much of how much we can make is all perception. Similar to the “value” that material goods bring they are priced accordingly. I was watching an old episode of shark tank last night and saw Lori push back and bluntly say, “I’m worth more than that.” I know I need to develop more of that mindset vs just accepting what I’m given. How do others feel?

I think it's good to be able to advocate for yourself while still having realistic expectations. It's an employer's market right now, so you have to do your best to balance the two. Push back and try to get every last dollar, but do so with tact and a realistic request so you don't get an offer rescinded.

This is one of the better salary takes I’ve seen - but keep in mind that when it comes to salary negotiations, what you are actually worth is not just what you think you’re worth. It’s a mixture of how a company values the role, how much they’re willing to pay for the best candidate and the value of the next best option. I had a candidate that we offered a salary of $115k, they countered with $140k, we responded with $125k and they held firm on $140k. 2 problems - it was above the budget I had for the role, and the next best candidate had everything we needed (we’d almost had to flip a coin to make the call) and a lower ask.

We offered them $115, settled at $125k and pulled the offer from candidate #1… they came back saying they be happy to take the original offer, but it was off the table. So be careful.

Right. There are an awful lot of posts on fishbowl and Glassdoor that are creating some false confidence levels in too many candidates that the value stream is one sided.

There is value in knowing your worth and not settling and there is also value in having a realistic mindset of what CAN be given to you… as what’s available. I think the key is knowing what your personal values are and what’s important to you and therefore being able to accurately identify where you’re willing to sacrifice in some areas and what areas are hard stops for you.

So true. Value is so subjective….im realizing I value work life balance and salary and those often come with direct trade offs

I mean.. Lori is also rich and has the upper hand. So, I see it a bit different. If I’m needing a job, I may just take it for now and keep searching

I’ve been verbally offered a position at a new company, but the recruiter insists on getting a verbal acceptance before sending the offer in writing. This person insists on negotiating salary before sending the paperwork. Generic benefits, RSUs, bonus info have been provided; it’s all unofficial.

This is absurd. Am I missing some “new way” of doing things? Your take?

Should I Go Back and Reneg? Recently I was offered a role as a Project Implementation Manager (In Retirement Services) .The salary range for Colorado residents was 65-89K. I’m located in NY so the recruiter said he would try to get me more. Ultimately he came back at 90K which is a bit inline with that I was seeing on Glassdoor but approx looks like I may leave 10-12K on the table. I accepted already but may get an offer from another HR company in account management around 90-100K. Need advice

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

I’m currently in a lease admin type role, in commercial real estate. I make a base salary of $50.5K with about $9k in bonuses. I’ve continuously received 7-10% raises over the last 3 years. I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Thanks in advance!

Hey fishes, recently got an offer of 245k plus a bonus, but no specificity and at least 3% cost of living annual raise. My current job I make 150k plus a 20% bonus and an annual cost of living raise anywhere from 2-3.5%. Have been in my current position about a year. Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.
