I finally got the promotion I've been working toward, but they're lowballing me hard - $12K less than what the previous employee earned. I know my worth but have zero negotiation experience. What's the smoothest way to push back without seeming ungrateful or greedy?

Say something like thank you so much for this opportunity… I’m excited to grow in this role and contribute at a higher level. I’d like to discuss the salary however. I’ve done some research and also know that the previous employee in this position earned about _______. Given my experience and the responsibilities I’ll be taking on, I believe a salary closer to that range would be fair and aligned with market standards.

If they come back with a firm NO.. say something like

“I understand if the salary can’t be adjusted at this time. Would it be possible to schedule a performance based salary review in 6 months, tied to specific goals and deliverables? That way, I can demonstrate my impact in the role and we can revisit compensation sooner than the standard cycle.

In no circumstances, would I ever mention that I know how much the previous employee made. That is completely irrelevant to the offer. They are making to you and comes off as very unprofessional.

You really, honestly should not even take that into consideration in regards to what they are offering you, you are not that person with the exact same experience and qualifications, and all the other factors that go into a salary. They are going to offer you what they think you are worth at this very moment Coming into this role and if you do not agree with that number of your current values worth in regards to an appropriate market pay range for the role then you can counter their offer with appreciation, but based on XYZ factors of your experience and qualifications, you’re not able to take anything less than X starting out. If they can’t do that, you can also inquire as to if they are open to providing additional PTO or work from home benefits, or any other benefits in lieu of additional pay.

It’s not totally off base to align comp with others in your role. That’s actually the goal of comp alignments, 3rd party assessments and market research. You want to ensure you’re fairly compensated. It’s also a way to make sure that pay is equal and fair.
I agree you should never say “Billy makes $100k so I want to make $100k too,” but if you know that others who do your job, have your degree, similar expertise and background and are making considerably more then it’s not completely improper to bring it up as a drag point. Pay transparency exists for this reason. I think there’s a way to acknowledge you have the data, and use it in conjunction with your actual value to the company to help align everyone on a fair salary.

Give some total salary numbers & %

12k difference for 60k might be significant, but 12k difference of 150k is less troublesome.

Also, it is normal to get promoted to the low end of the pay-range for that role since due to lacking experience in that role.

On the surface it's a hard sell to START at the salay the predecessor ENDED at as you're a freshly minted promotee in a new role while the person you are replacing had N years experience in that role. Your negotiation presentation will need to show you can deliver the same (or better) value to the employer than the previous employee.

How much were you making, and how much will you be paid now for context ?

I’m reviewing my resume getting ready to start my job search and have a question for recruiters, hiring managers. I’m looking for a role brand-side not agency side. Specialist roles aside, such as digital, when you see someone describing themselves as a “generalist marketer” is this a resume you’d pass on? My past roles have been such that I do a lot of marketing projects, tasks etc. but I’m not a specialist. I’m worried if I use this terminology I won’t even be considered for a role. Thank you

How do I strategically discuss or negotiate remote work abroad in an interview or when verbally handed the offer?

I am currently interviewing a few of companies. I want to be able to travel (abroad) and work. Time zone isn't an issue, I can work at the same time zone or ensure significant time overlap.

How would you ask for remote work without setting anyone off?

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?

What's the best form of compensation to ask for and why?

My employers' CEO just announced that they just received $7 million from investors. He wants to use that money to offer incentives to employees that hussle and drive more revenue for the company. We're not sure what those incentives look like yet, but here are some post-announcement rumors from my co-workers:

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.

I’ve been verbally offered a position at a new company, but the recruiter insists on getting a verbal acceptance before sending the offer in writing. This person insists on negotiating salary before sending the paperwork. Generic benefits, RSUs, bonus info have been provided; it’s all unofficial.

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?
