I see a lot off layoff chatter going on around. Is it safe to join as a Data Scientist? Most layoffs messages I see is from QA. Is a DS job safer here?

I need to be able to leave work at 4pm to pick up my son from daycare, but i can get back online at home to resume any unfinished work at 8pm. Is this realistic to convey to any companies in an interview? Pandemic aside, is face time 9-7pm really important?
