Take it!!!!! You can bail later if McDream Job comes flirting.
I’m a recruiter and you’re not wrong. It’s a very competitive market for job seekers with little to no jobs to really even choose from and it’s concerning to see. Can you negotiate the salary? Worth considering if you haven’t already!
A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. Also you can probably ask for 10k more than their offer without any heartburn which can potentially get you a little closer. Good luck!
Over 15 years ago, I was in a similar situation. Decided to take something 20% less than I had been making- if you overlook the fact I want actually making anything at the time of the offer. It was enough to get by. That salary ended up more than doubling.
Take it. $15k less is better than a massive gap on your resume. People will understand in this economy that you had to take what you could get. You can leverage the potential career growth into a better job down the line if/when things turn around
I've been laid off 2 times. First time I negotiated a $20k increase in pay with the outsourced that took my job. Hated working for that company since they tried at several points, to reduce my pay, even after moving up after getting my Master's degree.
This time I negotiated a salary $9k higher with options to pickup $5k more work, from the company that won the contract I was on. Unfortunately they gave me the same vibes of the previous outsourcer. After being unable or unhelpful to get my EOD, they ghosted me. Now I'm at the cusp of bankruptcy as I'm not able to find any positions making what I last did, and not getting contacted about any positions I've applied to, up to 4 hours away. Looking into an alternate career again.
Good luck finding another job 🍀
Counter with your justifications as long as they are reasonable. Just remember that consulting salaries are driven by contract rates, and one agency or contract may be priced lower than another for various reasons. Meaning it may not be that the company is simply low balling you. You likely already know this. But please go into negotiation with that in mind and not your own personal desire to make more alone. A good recruiter or hiring manager will have no issue letting you know if rates are a factor. The worst they can do is say no. Good luck.
