The federal hiring process is tough if you don’t have some sort of hiring preference (veteran, recent grad). It’s a bit easier to get a job at a gov contracting firm. Less stability and benefits but in many cases you’re doing the same work and you may have opportunities to move to the fed side.
Government roles that aren't entry-level tend to have specialized experience requirements either corresponding to a particular profession (like lawyer or economist) or that are difficult to get if you're not already working for the government or in an adjacent role (like as a contractor.)
