I got laid off from a job about two months ago where I was making 95K. Every interview I've gotten since has been such a self-esteem crusher. I'm applying to jobs in the 70-80K range because I'm willing to lower my salary a bit for now, but still trying to at least negotiate and get to 85- 87K. Not one hiring manager is willing to see me at this point. Is it truly because employers are that strict with their ranges, or are they taking advantage of the fact that I'm in need and should be budging?

I totally get how tough this must be for you. It's not uncommon for employers to stick to their budgeted salary ranges, but it's also possible they're taking advantage of the situation. Don't give up! Keep negotiating and remember your worth. You've made $95K before, so you know your skills are valuable. Keep pushing for that $85-87K range, and don't be afraid to walk away if it doesn't feel right. You'll find the right fit, and it'll be worth the wait. Keep your head up and keep going!

Hey OP it's happening at every level. I was laid off in 2023 making 240 and every offer I got in 2024 was 190-210. It sucks hard to not have any leverage but they know they can fill roles given the quantity of talent looking right now. I sucked it up took the pay cut. Pay your bills cut spending where you can and ride the lull until things pick up again. You're not alone and it's not personal!

I think employers are intentionally low-balling candidates because it’s now an employer’s market. The great resignation initially made them offer higher salaries. Now they’re basically like “We don’t trust you h@?3$” lol

In all seriousness, it’s really messed up…

In so many words, I somewhat agree. These employers now have a certain amount of money to allocate, especially post cohvid and inflation, so now (as they should) they need to spend wisely and try to only give the strongest candidates high pay while saving budget on the others. Its all business at the end of the day, The key is for us, is to know our worth and represent ourselves as the high-value employee we are, and the offers will better match our desires.

But yes, try not to take it personally. But it's VERY hard to do.. thinking no one needs/ wants/ values you when you know you have so much to offer! It's very demoralizing! I'm sorry.

We carry our esteem with us. I can smell desperate the second I walk into the room. Be confident, articulate and carry the conversation.

As for the pay "correction," you all can speak for yourselves. My industry's pay has been suppressed and kept stagnant for the past 4-5 decades to almost the criminal level. A recruiter told me looking for a AGM/KM position where I wasn't even going to take health benefits, that asking for $35k was too high 5 years ago.... And those were the last words she ever spoke to me.

Don't discuss the pay. Win them over with your talent. You have what it takes, just stay focused. They don't want to talk money on the first interview. Don't put it on your resume'.

Any ideas how to tackle this??

I’m thinking a stacked bar chart with the vertical categories to be my resources and horizontal the date/time and then each individual bar to be the name of the item being produced.

They stated 120k+ is extremely high for that role. What do you guys think? Playing the game?

When I negotiated my comp, all my discussions were around me being a junior and I only accepted my comp for that reason (would not have accepted if I was step above junior since it was low). Negotiations happened with HR, but my offer letter and documents never mention junior (but I have proof from HR saying I am a junior). How do I approach this with my boss as I’m not sure she’s aware I’m actually technically a junior? Revolving around asking for a move up + raise
