Relax. Just let your future employer HR know about the situation. BGV is done only to verify your tenure at the organization. I don't think they care about the remarks given. If you have any appreciation or appraisal mails with good feedback from both your consultancy and client, provide it to the new company.

See ... your contractor is threatening you. Nothing will happen like that. The Relieving letter of an organisation is a pre determined fixed format for everyone, which is setup at organisation level by HR team. In that fomat , they simply enter Name, start and end date, designation and rest all text remains constant. Do you think, for one ex employee they will be taking out a different format and for that also many approvals required. Just ignore. And also the question which you asked of editing..you can... because...the bgv will check your employment date, they won't ask about the bad comment because they aren't aware, as you have given edited one.

Really surprised that someone can be so vindictive. Normally, the parting should be always on a good note, as the person leaving is an ambassador of the company. In my personal opinion nothing should happen. If that happens you can easily drag him in the labour court where he will be properly proportioned
