I have been unemployed for a few months now and the hardest part honestly has been staying motivated after constant rejection emails. I know the market is rough right now but I am curious how other people are keeping their confidence up during long job searches in tech. What helped you stay focused while looking for your next role? I feel like I spend more time applying than actually improving my skills lately.

I only recently landed something after 9 months, but what helped me was freelancing (was able to find some short term contracts), joining various communities, trying to take classes/upskill, and only applying on certain days. I would take a lot of breaks whenever I started getting burnt out. I also tried to set up chats with people whenever I could.

in calgary, canada it seems networking locally is preferred. my friend got his job with linkedin premium using inmail and shortlisting very carefully people in that team( you dont get much credits to use inmail every month) and getting them to meet over coffee and then talking in general about the company before skillfully sliding in the job post topic and asking for an interview.

Totally get what you're saying about spending more time applying than actually improving your skills. I honestly went through the same phase - endless rejection emails, just starts messing with your confidence after a while.

Something that helped me was switching up the application routine. Instead of blasting out generic resumes everywhere, I started tailoring each one for the specific role. I know it sounds like more work (and honestly, sometimes it is) but even little edits - matching keywords from the job posting, or tweaking bullet points to hit their must-haves - made a difference.

Also, I ran my resume through a couple of different ATS scanners like Resume Worded, MyPerfectResume, and ResumeJudge to see how well it matched the jobs I wanted. It took a bit of pressure off since I could actually see what was missing and fix it. That way, I felt like I was making progress instead of just throwing my applications into a black hole.

Have you tried that? Sometimes just seeing your score gives you a small confidence boost, honestly.

Curious - what kind of tech roles are you applying to? I found that changing up my approach totally changed my results for product manager positions, but engineering jobs felt like a different game.

So I just moved states. I’m staying with a parent for a while in a pretty large house and my cat keeps hiding for hours on end (I think to snooze). Any thoughts? She’s spent time with me and I walked around with her while she explores. And she’s ventured solo. Seemed she’s warming up well. Except this again. I admit it’s giving me horrible anxiety that she won’t respond at all until I locate her because even I’m learning where things are and want her to be safe. This is the third time 😭

I got a call from the Google recruiter about my L7 em interview Google She said I did overwhelmingly good on all interviews except one had mixed feedback on a system design. No surprise because it was not a good interview. The recruiter said i had a choice to go to hiring committee, give referrals they could call about my system design or take another system design interview. I’m not confident about the system design because of the bad experience I had with the previous interviewer. What should I do?

Quick question.
I was a contractor for a big company and they just let me know that my last day is December 30th. I got this position thanks to a recruiting company that has been great and gives me benefits.
Should I:
- Continue working with the recruiting company, hoping that they will find another position for me? (as they told me they will, and when they applied me I started working with my current company within 2 weeks)
- Work with the recruiter + apply for jobs on my own?

Why are people so hesitant to hire disabled candidates?

I am a visually impaired practitioner in South Africa, with 7 years of experience, and as soon as recruiters or business owners hear/read that I'm disabled, the conversation gets awkward and I never hear from them again.
