I have people on my team I refer to as “worker bees.” They like working on specific things they are good at and nothing else. As a manager, would you push them out of their comfort zones? I see it as personal growth, but I also appreciate that they like to focus on more mundane things.

You should take this case by case. Sit each of them down for a one on one to discuss their goals. (Do not refer to them as worker bees to their faces). Ask if they feel they’re ready to take on more or if they like where they’re at. Growth should be their decision not yours.

Well, you know one team members career desires. lol. Worker bees is a cute name but not everyone will like it.

It's good to have people who are content in their circle of competence. It's still a good idea to check in on them and make sure they aren't getting bored. If they're not really into the work they'll be spinning their wheels and quality can suffer. It might be good to encourage them to step out a bit, but if their work is excellent it might be best to just let them keep cooking.

I’m always checking. I just want to make sure I’m not missing anything. One person is approaching retirement age, so I understand their POV. They would also be leaving big shoes to fill.

Yes but agree with others, first have a conversation with them. Is it a growth area they want to develop?

Ask them what they want. Not everybody wants to keep climbing or being challenged. It’s ok to just be happy with your current role, work load and work/life balance.

That’s an important observation. I got my director role because my CD hated management. She just wanted to write. So she left for another job and went back to a sr. writer with a pay increase.

I think it’s one of the things that keeps them content with where they are. Because they are good at what they do, I can them more than the average 3% increase each year. Recommending them for promotions puts them in managerial positions they don’t want. Some people just like working and not leading. I don’t see it as a problem.

Are they pushing for career advancement or a feeling that they aren’t being utilized? If not and they are highly valuable and full utilized in their current role then I’d say it’s great to have those people on the team

One is close to retirement and the other really just makes the most of work/life balance, which I admire.

Has anyone else noticed they’re stressed without “feeling” stressed? I don’t feel as stressed as when I was in college. However, I’m still on the job hunt and I think stress is manifesting itself without me realizing it. My skin is showing really bad acne, I feel unmotivated even to fill out job applications; I’m having trouble falling asleep at night and even though I sleep past noon sometimes I still feel tired during the day... Is it stress or burnout?

Hi everyone, I'm new to Canada and want to start my career here in the Financial and Banking industry. I have passed the CFA level 2 exam and was wondering if I have to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) as most of the job postings here mention about it. I saw that if someone passes at least the CFA level 1 exam then the requirement of CSC is exempted. Can anyone enlighten me about this? As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.

Went for a pre-employment drug test yesterday. They never asked me if I was on any medications. I had to ask them and was told "oh yeah, just put any you may think make a difference in this text box." I put Xanax, Flexeril, and gabapentin. All of which are prescribed and used as directed. Now I'm terrified that I should have put ALL my meds, to including my psych meds. I've been sober over 12 years and never touched drugs (just booze) but I'm having a full blown panic attack.
