I interviewed at a FinTech startup today where the head of talent wore a hoodie and asked me what my spirit animal was. This was for a Head of Risk position, mind you. It felt like they were trying so hard to not be a boring bank that they forgot they’re supposed to be a professional financial institution. Am I just getting old, or is this disruptor culture just a cover for a total lack of internal controls?

I don’t think you’re getting old, that would’ve thrown me off too. Casual is one thing, but for a Head of Risk role you’d still expect a certain level of professionalism. Sometimes it does feel like “disruptor culture” swings a bit too far and starts looking more like a lack of structure than anything else.

Okay finance gurus, I have an idea and interested in your thoughts. Might be a bad one so be gentle 🙂. I have a 2 yr old and another on the way. Need to start planning for college. I was thinking of buying a condo or 2 in lieu of saving and selling them down the line for tuition. Condos downtown are pretty inexpensive (T3) so it’s financially feasible. But is this a good idea or too risky?

I'm in finance/tech FPA, looking to go back to the defense industry for a 25% increase in TC. But wanted to see if I should leverage the new salary with current company to see if they'll match.

Background: got a promotion at current company that didn't come with sufficient increase . After stating my case I was told it would be evaluated next October, which is what prompted the initial job search.

Current TC 103K [88/15], offer 125k base [+discretionary bonus].

Hi everyone, I'm new to Canada and want to start my career here in the Financial and Banking industry. I have passed the CFA level 2 exam and was wondering if I have to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) as most of the job postings here mention about it. I saw that if someone passes at least the CFA level 1 exam then the requirement of CSC is exempted. Can anyone enlighten me about this? As the CSC exam costs above 1000 CAD, I wanted to be sure if I need it before investing behind it.

Is it the case here?
