I just got an offer that is $50k higher in base salary but that would require me to move from a MCOL to a HCOL. Is the $50K increase enough to switch or is the amount too small for COL?

There is a difference if you move from 50k to 100k versus if you move from 450k to 500k.

120 in MCOL is equal to about 150 in HCOL. So you get a bit of a bump there. There are more finance opportunities in larger cities than smaller cities so you have to assess your future earnings potential.

I would check to see the rent difference between the two cities. Typically the biggest difference from switching to a city with a higher COL is usually housing. Food and other costs normally aren’t going to be that substantial unless you’re going from the Midwest to LA or NYC. Other thing to consider is if you were to buy a house in the future in the HCOL. HCOL median home price can be significantly more expensive than MCOL cities

Good point to check! Thank you!!

Provide more info about the move and your spending habits

I would say I’m more of a saver than a spender. I save about 50% of my income per paycheck. I’m worried since I’ve heard HCOL is very expensive and if i were to move, i might actually save less than here due to the high costs.

Not enough info. How much are you saving now? How close are you to living paycheck to paycheck

I would say I save about 50% of my income now but with the new base, I’m hoping I can increase it but the hesitation is due to the living costs

As a financial analyst you should have provided the following. What is the COL factor delta. What is your current consumption level at current COL vs expected at the new and what is the after tax implications of the two locations. Maybe you might get a better answer.

I was wondering if the review course “CPE Self Study Course” for the CFF was enough preparation to study and pass the CFF exam. The CFE review course was enough and like if you get a question wrong it explains it well so that when it comes up in a different way in the real exam you can still get it. But when I saw the outline for the CFF material and there seems to be a lot of topics so I was wondering if the review course was sufficient considering this exam is also multiple choice. Thanks!

I am a registered sales assistant which means I have my series 7. I also have the 63 and my Life & Health license. I was a financial advisor but the role is commission only so I decided to take a role as an assistant for some time to learn etc. I really like my role, but I only make 32k a year and after taxes I only take home about 25k. I have a gut feeling that I’m not being paid market value but it’s tough to find comparable salaries. Do you think $15.38/hr is a fair wage in this case?

Currently a Wealth Advisor for Citi but I honestly hate it here with a passion it’s the worst company I’ve ever worked for in my life and I’ve been in Wealth Management in the banking channel for over a decade. Series 7, Series 63, Life, CFP, ChFC, and soon to have my MBA with a focus in Mergers & Acquisitions. I’m look to enter another area of Finance at this point instead of starting over somewhere else from scratch, but not sure what direction to go. Interested in Investment Banking or M&A.
