These companies pay for loyalty not talent. The United States is becoming an oligarchy and people are paid off to keep the system running. They try to make an example of a select few to “demonstrate” their will over society. Don’t believe a word you hear. APACs exist for a reason. Non Profits are just a vehicle to lobby regulation, influence government officials and transfer wealth all while avoiding taxation. This country is morally, politically and financially cooked. Freedom is an illusion in this country. There is a puppet master you just don’t see him and you’re just a cog in the machine.
leadership doesn’t know unless you tell them. make it easier for your team to contribute the way you want them to
It’s a sign of a very bad engineer pretending to be a very good engine.
Copilot/Claude should help clean it up though.
He may truly be a god, but decided to be a devil when it was time to quit. The ‘mad scientist manifesto’ may be a deliberate ’middle finger’ gesture to the organisation that didn’t treat him accordingly. I smell sabotage! It may just be unfortunate that you are the victim of his ‘middle finger’ gesture and not the management it was designed to hurt.
If I were you, over time, I will try to ask people I trust in the organisation about why he left. People I know that are not corporate bots that may try to cover up. At least, this will give me an idea of the type of organisation I’m working for and help me to determine how to carry/coordinate myself within it. There are so many toxic organisations out there. Beware.
Just a thought.
Just throw claude code at it and let it figure it out.
Thank god we got genai now. Ask it to help you make it more readable
Creativity exists in a spectrum between careful, adaptive processes and wild, innovative spurts. It takes all kinds.
I worked with one of those. It took him being gone for leadership to realize the things he “miraculously fixed” were almost always his train wrecks he caused to begin with.
Start documenting the gaps and problems and don’t burn yourself out fixing it. If they’re in denial of his mistakes, they shouldn’t burden you with the cleanup.
the AI tools are actually decent at this now — paste a function into Claude and ask it to explain the intent. won't catch everything but it's faster than reverse-engineering single-letter variables by hand. just don't trust the output without running the tests first
