There isn’t anything I could say that would hold up to the test of time. Things are moving too fast right now. I can say the best skill set is to be flexible, read the room, and move on before things get too bad. Open to anyone who has a better feeling about roles that will stick around. I might just be pessimistic.
Good advice!!
Not to be a negative Nancy, but I agree with Manager 1 above. There really isn’t any role that’s completely “safe.” At the end of the day, if layoffs or cuts are happening, anyone can be affected. It doesn’t matter who you are or what your title is.
True! Good to reframe it that way.

Revenue-generating roles are safest: demand gen, growth marketing, performance marketing with direct ROI ties. Companies cut brand and content first because impact's harder to measure. Strategic roles requiring deep business context (product marketing at tech companies, category management) are harder to offshore or automate.
Most vulnerable: social media management, content production, junior copywriting – exactly what AI tools target first. "Safe" is relative though. Even performance marketers get cut when budgets freeze. The real protection is showing clear revenue contribution, not just campaign metrics.
Yeah true! I feel like marketing itself is a field that is bound to go when budgets are cut. But there is also always a demand for marketing as well for companies so it is an interesting place to be.
