Have you done this before with the partner that pulled the assignment? If not, I’d suggest just apologizing, not try to make any excuses, and say you hope that they will give you a second chance and it won’t happen again. If you’ve previously missed a deadline with this partner, that’s tougher to do. In any event(, you need to just move on and do whatever you need to do to not miss any more deadlines. If by the end of the year, you don’t miss any other deadlines, you can try to paint this as you progressing and improving and that might buy you more time. You should expect this to come up in any year-end review, though.

Also, ask for help if the detraction is something that the partner can help with. I had an associate burn out badly, but didn’t ask for help until all bridges with all partners were burned and we were just waiting for HR to get the termination paperwork done. I still hate that, but they had lost all trust, which is what this business is built on.
Honestly, i feel like your words will mean very little to them. You can apologize but the best thing you can do is change your actions. If you don’t get your butt moving until the deadline rolls around you need to set earlier deadlines to complete parts of the assignment and get better at task initiation.
