I get it. I’m not in my 50s yet, but I’ve seen my dad and a couple of mentors go through this exact thing. They felt invisible after 12+ months out. One of them got traction again by tightening their resume, dropping dates on older roles, and leaning into consulting gigs to stay active. I know it’s hard, but you’re not washed up. You’ve still got value, and maybe it just needs to be packaged a little differently for people to see it.
It's very real, unfortunately. It's probably not the only reason you are struggling; the job market is terrible and I know a few people who have been unemployed after a layoff for quite awhile now. Sadly, though, some employers don't respect experience the way they should. Thankfully, some do.
I would say age discrimination is very common. But it's also illegal, so of course no one is ever going to admit to it. But there are always plenty of reasons to neglect to interview someone, or to brush them off after an interview. Ageism is one of those things that we can see and feel, but trying to pin it down and proving it is impossible.
It's definitely something that needs to be talked about more because I believe it's a lot more common than people want to realize. In my personal experience, if you have a job in your early 50s, you're kind of expected to hold onto it until retirement. If you try to job-hop or if you get laid off, God forbid, people assume you're bad with technology or unwilling to adapt to new ways of doing things. I finally found a job in the industry, but it took significantly longer than it should have.
