I literally just got back from the hospital where I took my 6 week-old last night (my wife and I switched places so I could handle the other kids). At 3 this morning I emailed everyone I was supposed to meet with today and told them “my kid is in the hospital and I won’t be available today”. No promise to reschedule or apology for canceling. It’s my freaking baby in the hospital! If I ever found out that a colleague was meeting with me instead of taking his baby to the hospital, I’d lose all respect for them.

Nope. Never gonna happen. I'd rather be fired than not be with one of my kids while they're in the hospital.

Ok - this is a post that is cringe worthy. It shouldn't be on LinkedIn.

As a father of 2 and someone who owns his own business I am though vaguely going to try and balance this. We don't know how ill the child is - was this part of a treatment plan, has someone said we are doing this to be on the safe side...or is it a full on medical emergency. RSV is normally a mild condition.
Secondly, alot comes down to the relationship with his wife. She maybe saying - I've got this, go do what you have to do. It really is a team effort and all that.

I have had moments where work came first. My wife was in labor and I attended a client meeting before driving home! I have missed school sports days, drop-offs at the school gates and other special moments. That was the choice I took, my wife understands. Would I document it on LinkedIn....nope. But - if you choose to walk a particular path then at least have the courage to stand tall and face consequences and all that.

On the face of it the above post does feel at the extreme end of the spectrum for parental behaviour. I don't have problem with that, I do though question why you have to tell LinkedIn about it.

And before anyone asks...if I found one of my employees at work when their child was in the hospital I would send them home. I don't expect my employees to make the same sacrifices I have done.

From a financial standpoint in this market, which would be a better approach in Austin -

1. Buy a ~8-850k house that meets most of our ideal criteria (size, schools, interiors etc) to stay long term

2. Buy a ~5-550k house that’s not ideal with the plan of moving into an ideal home in 4-5 years when kid is ready for school.

How easy is it to get a mortgage for the second home?

Household income - 300k

Happy to add more details as needed

Advice and/or consolation anyone? My wife and I (both above average health 30year olds) were trying for 11 months before getting pregnant and then had a week 5 early miscarriage a few months back. If the stress and surprise of just how difficult it apparently is to get pregnant wasn’t enough, the miscarriage put us over. We got back to it and have been trying for the last 2 months again, still no luck. We’re freaking out… all we want is a family. Any similar stories? Advice? 😢

Does anyone else feel that the more content someone puts in their LinkedIn headline, the more full of it they are? I say this as someone with a bunch of stuff lol but at least it’s all at one company and accurate.

I’m talking mostly about two kinds of people. 1. The influencer who is actually unemployed, but lists 25 BS things they do
2. The brand collector, who writes “ex-“ for every former company they worked at and school they went to. Maybe less full of it but still insufferable.
