I need some advice on negotiating for a new job. The recruiter mentioned a $160k to $180k range, and when she asked what I wanted, I said I’d need at least $170k to move forward. They just came back at $165k. I held firm on $170k, so now she’s seeing if they can do $170k plus a bonus. I’m worried I capped myself by being too specific. Since I already have a job, does this give me leverage to keep negotiating?

If you were unhappy with 170, they why was that your number? You asked for it, they are now pushing for your number. What's the problem?

You have to know your number and stick to it. Having a job that you can stay in is leverage to you to be able to pass if the number is too low. If they come back and say they can’t do it, that’s when you can decide what’s next.

I don't think there is anything wrong with what you did. That is still 10k less than the top of their range, so I don't think you capped yourself. I really wouldn't worry about that; it sounds like they are trying to make it work for you.

.Wait and see what she says before you spend time trying to figure out what to do next.

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Does anyone have suggestions for what a salary should be for a Digital Marketing Analyst | Paid Social & Performance Media? I have 1 year of experience, the job asks for 0-1 year of experience. I feel I over meet the qualifications in some areas and just meet them in others. The recruiter said 50k is the salary the company is offer. I know I can negotiate. What are your thoughts on what the salary should be?

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.

Got offered 68k after 2 years as a contractor (62.5k) doing project management/business admin in a tech department at a Fortune 500 bank. I have an A.S degree and working on my bachelor’s/masters may 2024. I negotiated to 84k NYC. I have seen interns get offered 38 per hour (79k) for internship positions with a similar role.

Thoughts? Should I go higher? I do my job well that’s why they decided to keep me as a contractor after my internship.

Im currently going through industry change.
Im a pastry cook with 4yrs experience and the average salary start for this position is now at $22/hr here in vegas, especially in the strip. But cooking/baking is not my passion. So im changing into veterinary medicine and im seeing that the starting rate for a vet tech is around $16-18. Why is that?? Why are people in the vet med industry being paid so low?? Something needs to change. Labor of love aint enough for the people in this job.

Currently I work for a small company that does the construction of small cell utility poles and roof top sites for the major cell carriers like VZW, T-mobile, AT&T and so on. I am a project coordinator but I do everything under the sun. Created project tracker. Submitti bids, sourcing material, negotiating price on materials, handling post construction inspections, scheduling sub contractors, notifying stakeholders, coordinating with construction managers - property owners - building management.

I received an offer for a role that is a lot more money than I thought but I still want to negotiate and see how much more money I can get. What can I say if the salary is already above average for the role in the market and city I live in?
