Unfortunately, age discrimination is a thing. I never really believed it until I entered my 40s and then I started to notice it. If you can do the work, you can do the work; your age shouldn't matter!
I've been saying that same thing, I've been out of work for 5 months now. Savings are disappearing quickly, I've put in about 1000 resumes, am amazing at what I do, have never had an issue getting a job!! Now 44 and a Latina woman who was born here it's like I can't catch a break!! It's insane and very sad to think that because of that I can't get in somewhere.
I’m with ya!!
Had a job interview and manager was 26. He said “you’ve been a server longer than I’ve been alive” No shit,Sherlock!! It’s stated on my resume how long I’ve been bartending!! I’ve changed years of experience on my resume now. Pretty bad when you gotta dumb down your experience …
I am a PT personal chef and work as a prep cook at a retirement home fir the benefits. I lied by 10 years to get the prep cook job. i changed the year i graduated from college by 10 years! I was going through a divorce and had experienced ageism in my job search so had to do something! Also sunscreen and botox are your friends gurlies!!! 🤗
That is illegal. Look up laws regarding recording conversations in your state. Record all of your interviews. If you can get them to say it is based off of your appearance, and specifically ask them what about your appearance, to get them to say even in a round about way that it is because of that. Report them to the EEOC. It will take a bit to be reviewed, but when they do the investigation if the EEOC finds them in violation, they will fine them, give you the money, and a lovely paper called a right to sue letter. At that point take someone the money they gave you from the fine a find a good lawyer.
That's what I thought. If you can't discriminate on skin color why should age matter I applied at one place, field house, on the application it has a spot for your age and your references not a single place for work history or skills. Etc. And I know when I got the app they were hiring. Every time I call back, I get rude responses like if the hiring manager wants to talk to you he will. And the place I went to yesterday I was more or less told since you can tell I was smart, didn't have a ass and am not young and blonde and sparkly don't not even bother filling out the application. And I for a fact know there very short staffed. Reporting them will take time and I need a job yesterday. I'm already homeless out of food and 0 money how do I navigate getting a job asap.
Awww thats messed up. I feel you on feeling rejected. Im 40 dont look it at all but I'm sick of working with lazy kids. Not all kids are lazy but there's a bunch out there. I work my buttons off amd can't find anything that pays decent at all. I hope you find something. Screw those who think you dont look the part its playing the part that is important
I’m 20 years old and I agree. My generations vision, and responsibility is impaired by the blue screen. It seems like most of these companies are just trying to make it work for them to be able to get their money back from the young crowd. Think about it, I had an interview at this fast food restaurant and the employer tried to decrease the pay with negotiation. I mentioned how much they were paying and how many hours I would have. They said that it was for experienced people only. I don’t know but it seems like they’re playing tic tac toe with the wise and youth.
How you look and your age definitely plays a part, as sad as that is to say. There are some places where they truly don't consider those things but most places do. They want people to make them look good.
Apply where you CAN get hired like a diner or waffle house or Dennys and then just keep progressing from there. Ya gotta start somewhere, right?
I so feel your pain. I am going thru that too.
I just want to say give me a month just prove to you I honest to want to be working doesn't matter what kind have experience in all which make me over qualified. very frustrating just let me show what I do.
