From my experience unless you are a SME on an in demand skill and very technically proficient where you can demand a high salary it is difficult to progress beyond a certain point in your career/ salary without going into management. Reason being it’s difficult to have a large enough impact as an individual contributor to go behind a certain point salary wise.
That’s a pain! It’s annoying having to go down that road when I just don’t think I’m suited.
I feel the exact same way. I'd like to keep progressing in my career but I don't want to go into management. Which feels really limiting, because what am I supposed to do besides just… Keep doing what I'm already doing?
Yeah there is like a cut off point, it’s so weird that’s no other direction in most jobs.
You have to be very good in a niche so the demand inflates the salary. I know that management would not suit me, and I have turned down a couple of promotions because of it. I guess that means my career is stagnant, but I have a very good balance between salary and responsibility, so I don't know why that would be a bad thing.
The balance is what you want! I’m definitely still yet to get there but hopefully I can without a managerial role.
