I received a decent offer, but the interview process revealed way more tasks than the initial posting. Since the actual role is much bigger, can I use these added responsibilities to justify asking for more money than they offered?

Of course you can. The more important question is whether the company will agree the added responsibilities warrant higher pay. The answer to that depends on how strong of a case you make.

And how strong your skills and previous experience are aligned to the role. Always remember you are always one among 2 or 3 finalists for a position.

You can ask for more but not for that reason. The hiring process as a whole is part of revealing the description, not just the initial posting.

I will say something like, “Because of the scope of this role, I need X-Y range.” Include experiences that show you are capable of the added tasks.

I think that’s normal

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’m currently in the process of being converted from contractor to permanent. In my initial conversations I was under the impression that I was in a different pay grade and asked for a salary 25k higher than the max allotted for my position. I feel like it gave the impression that I don’t know what I’m doing. Any suggestion how I can recover from this?

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.
