I received an offer yesterday with a great salary but weak benefits. Like really weak. Can I negotiate PTO and health insurance, or is that not a thing? I'm used to way better coverage and don't want to take a huge step back. Is it normal to ask about this stuff, or should I just take what they're offering?

You could ask about the health insurance plans they provide. I’m not sure what you’d expect they’d negotiate on. The plans are company-wide and not really on an individual basis. PTO is also dependent on the company. Many will have set days for certain years in the company or roles. That all being said, you should definitely try to negotiate on something if the pay isn’t great. What is the selling point if the benefits and pay are weak?

Pro sometimes can be negotiated. Health insurance… no, I’ve never heard of that.

PTO should always be up for negotiation. Health insurance isn't going to change. I'd definitely ask for more PTO. That's one of the easier things to negotiate in my experience.

While everyone is just saying "no" on the health insurance, I just wanted to explain why. It's a group policy, not an individual policy. Small companies often have crappier benefits because "buying in bulk" is rewarded in health insurance programs. I had a small business and the premiums were outrageous, but there were less than 10 people on the policy. The more members, the cheaper the premiums.

This is why it's important to consider the *total compensation package*. People tend to think that means their base salary plus bonus, but there's way more to consider: PTO - the more you have, the less days you have to work for the same money (so calculating what you make per day with PTO factored in is a good number to have handy when making comparisons), 401k match, stock options, vesting structure, sign-in bonus, retention bonus, and yup, health benefits. Always ask to see their benefit options *and* the cost.

You could even negotiate an even higher salary with the justification that you'll have to outlay more cash out of your own pocket for your healthcare compared to what you have now.

Good morning!

Still trying to figure out this whole Fishbowl thing, so here goes my first post.

I would love to get into provider credentialing, but all employers I've looked at want at least 3 years of experience. So, I'm looking at Provider Network Coordinator roles, because I'm finding some of those roles don't need AS MUCH experience. I'm a RHIT, and have been working in healthcare for nearly 10 years.

Any input on employers is appreciated!

What was the hardest class year for you? I used to think first year was by far the hardest but now I’m a third year and I’m really feeling the pressure to step up. I work in finance and at this point I’m expected to handle closing documents, manage first years, draft some portions of major docs, etc. I feel like I’m always frazzled, constantly second guessing if I handled something correctly and anxious to answer calls from clients/OC. The worst part is I think people can tell I’m a mess....
