I would think it's going to have to be a track record of high-impact results, specialized expertise, and standout performance during the interview process. How you present yourself in the interview is also crucial. Showcasing your ability to solve the company’s specific challenges, aligning your achievements with their goals, and demonstrating executive-level communication can all help justify a higher offer. Depends on the company, but some places avoid the top end of the range because they reserve that for top performers or those who have grown into the role. They also leave some room for salary adjustments in the future. I’ve also seen companies include the upper end based on bonuses that are performance dependant (eg. Netflix has a PMM posting live at the moment that has a range of 200k to 350k, which is likely based on performance).
But in terms of positioning yourself for the upper end of the range, it can depend a lot on interview performance, likability, and negotiation skills.
Those salary ranges always make me laugh a little bit. I mean, that's pretty significant. I recently applied for a job that had a range of $50k-$85k. And I have to wonder, what are they even thinking posting that? Do they want someone with three years of experience, or somebody with a decade of experience? I feel like that kind of thing should be decided before the listing ever hits the public.
It all comes down to experience. If you have it with proven results you’ll be closer to the top. If you don’t, you’ll be at the bottom. All jobs are structured this way.
