I'm not sure there is ever a right time to join the Big 4 lol but if you think you can handle the job, I say go for it. If nothing else, working for PwC looks amazing on a resume.
“Layoffs”/performance based separations happen all year around in small waves at each of the firms, sometimes more than others. Nobody is ever safe which is why Big 4 is a big grind fest in the “up or out” model. 99%+ of people don’t make the cut over the years to become a PPMD, so if you like the experience it brings you and go into it with a “try your best and see how far you make it” mindset then you’ll be good. Most people get off the train at some point to slow down because Big 4 will consume your life if you let it.
DT1s experience resembles mine. Around M2 I started to feel a lot more in control of my schedule and stopped feeling like my career was completely in control of my life. Obviously that is all practice and project specific and it isn't like I was working 40 hours a week every week or anything like that, but it felt like my non-work life was a lot easier to accommodate and integrate into my work life.
