I see that PwC is hiring, and I was thinking about applying because I've always wondered what it's like to work for the Big 4. But I know they had layoffs this year already, so is now a safe time to join the firm or should I avoid it?

I'm not sure there is ever a right time to join the Big 4 lol but if you think you can handle the job, I say go for it. If nothing else, working for PwC looks amazing on a resume.

“Layoffs”/performance based separations happen all year around in small waves at each of the firms, sometimes more than others. Nobody is ever safe which is why Big 4 is a big grind fest in the “up or out” model. 99%+ of people don’t make the cut over the years to become a PPMD, so if you like the experience it brings you and go into it with a “try your best and see how far you make it” mindset then you’ll be good. Most people get off the train at some point to slow down because Big 4 will consume your life if you let it.

DT1s experience resembles mine. Around M2 I started to feel a lot more in control of my schedule and stopped feeling like my career was completely in control of my life. Obviously that is all practice and project specific and it isn't like I was working 40 hours a week every week or anything like that, but it felt like my non-work life was a lot easier to accommodate and integrate into my work life.

Question for my friend at KPMG. Her MDs and Partners have been directing her to eat her hours. If she charges over 45 hours she will get emails from management and when she charges over 65 she got a call from a PPMD. I work at deloitte and have never been told to do this and thought it honestly was illegal. Thoughts? It doesn’t seem right that she’s having to eat those hours and feel scared when she’s working til 10/12 every night.

Would you stay living in a city you like but have very few friends there, or move back to your hometown where most of your friends and family are? My current city has a population of about 500k and my hometown is about 100k. My main reason to move away from my hometown was dating and jobs, but neither seem to be going any better over the past 2 years. COL is about 28% higher than my hometown and jobs don’t pay much better.

As a tax manager how do you stop feeling like a factory worker on the line churning out tax returns? For those who moved from a client serving role to an internal role in public accounting while at a fairly high level (experienced manager or senior manager), did you take a pay cut or does your pay stay flat when you transition with minimal increases in subsequent years? Also what role are you in now? I really like EY and the company. I’d like to look at moving to an internal role but I’m worried I’ve priced myself out (currently at around 140k comp in LCOL).
