I spoke with my female boss about my career goals to move into a leadership role in the next decade. She spent half of the conversation dismantling my reasons and mansplaining leadership roles.

I have the degrees and experience to move up.

So, I’m wondering - in a healthy company:
1) Is this normal manager response during the direct report career aspirations?
2) During the mansplaining, what is an employee supposed to do? Cut off? Redirect?

She means well - but how to respond?

A good manager should help you achieve your goals, not discourage you.

This is absolutely not normal at all- and from my perspective it doesn't seem like she's supportive at all, this is certainly not a healthy company to work for. In my current role, my manager encourages me to connect with those in the position that I want to pursue, over the past 6 months I nutured relationships with Managers in other departments to strengthen my understanding of the role- there were conversations around the interview process, resume, etc. So when the opportunity became available I was well- prepared to interview for the role. While things didn't work out and for good reasons-my manager still writes my career goals into my performance reviews and ensures that I stick to it.

I say all that to say- I've been in your shoes before until I found a company that supported me and my professional growth. However, during that time when in conversations with my manager seem to suck similar to yours, I basically dismissed their advice and continue to build towards my goals, but I would encourage you to lead with caution because your manager is showing a few red flags. From here on out be limited to what you share.

I hope this helps!

Why would you want to stay is you have one foot out the door?

I don’t think she means well. It sounds like she is trying to tell you what you want. And anytime someone tries to tell me how I feel or what I want like, I say, “I appreciate your feedback, but I am passionate about my goals and aspirations to land a leadership position one day and I am creating a plan for myself in order to achieve this. And I truly appreciate your support. Thank you.” And that would shut down anyone who is doubting you and telling you that you can’t. When you exert confidence about who you are, what you’re capable of, and what you want, not even your own boss can bring you down.

Technically, a woman can’t mansplain. Maybe she talked over you and in a condescending, patronizing tone, but she didn’t mansplain. Did she whitesplain or heterosplain?

funny

That was the closest word that I could come up with in the limited post above.

But it was overly explaining things that was common knowledge, smothering information and matronizing in tone.

Whatever the female version of mansplaining would be. - that is what it was.

Sorry you experienced it- major ick

I have experienced this before and this is not normal. Your manager should be supportive of your career aspirations. Even if you don’t have enough experience, she should be helping in bridging the gaps. I would recommend you to either move to another team for a growth opportunity and be firm with where you want to be in ‘x’ years.

She is projecting insecurity and feeling threatened with her response. Find a mentor in your company who will support your career goals and if there isn't one, it may be time to move on.

Managers are supposed to help their team grow even if that means up and out of the team they are on, managers that try to keep employees in place have a them problem they need to work on.

If the company is decent, see if there is a mentor program to help you on your goal path, if there is none then sounds like to start considering finding a new place/department/team that will help you where you want to go.

TL;DR Managers are supposed to support their team's growth. If they don't want to help, then find a place/team/mentor who does

1099 or w-2 ? I have been given the option though the company prefers w-2. It’s a day rate booking couple of months or more (no end date).
