It is a personal choice to break your anonymity at work. My experience has been to let my supervisor as well as HR know that I am in recovery. It has come in handy on a few occasions. I also let several of my teammates know I'm in recovery and there was an occasion where they saved my bacon and prevented me from accidentally downing a Mimosa!
This is a tough one. We go to any length, right? If you feel your sobriety is at risk, then tell whomever you need too. If you work for a large agency/holding company they actually have a protocol (probably in your handbook). For my, my sobriety is sacred and so is my anonymity. Can you do 730a meetings? What about phone or online meetings? I live in NYC and I know I'm lucky to have meeting at almost every hour so I can hit a 10p or 11p. Whatever you decide stay close to us. Make tons of calls. My favorite trick in open seating is to drop a pen, phone, or my badge on the floor. Any excuse to get on my knees for 3 seconds and say help or thank you. Sending you lots of love.
6 or 7am meetings worked for me until I established myself in my current agency. I’ve since earned the trust needed to establish a permanent schedule that works for my long term sanity and program. Out early (5pm) a couple days a week and no one blinks about it.
I love that trick-I'm going to have to use it sometime! I just moved to NYC area - I'm staying in nj with my family until I find a job. I decided to tell my manager because I thought that I needed to express that if I leave at 630 - it's for a reason. I went to my first morning meeting today and it was fantastic - so I'll make that part of my schedule. I think with me I'm very open about my disease and being an alcoholic because I hope that I can be a vehicle to help someone else (and I've had many peers ask me for help because they knew I was sober). I try to practice anonymity in other ways. Thank you for your suggestions and input @spark I appreciate it all!
My new job is pretty intense and it seems like people work ALL the time. My director and manager and boss are trying to change that culture but it's still very apparent. Do I tell my boss or HR that I'm in AA and need to go to meetings? I'm pretty good with work life balance boundaries but I'm wondering if I should also like... tell them so they understand why I have to leave at the end of the day. I'm always willing to work after the meeting but I need to make sure I get to it.
