The only thing I think HR need is a medical leave of absence from his/her PCP, that should be sufficient for the time off, no need to be specific at this stage.
Continue being supportive of your friends decision to seek treatment, that’s going to be the best thing you can do

Very much agree TBWA and HM. I’m like... way too open sometimes. And vagueness can be pretty necessary sometimes!
They can’t fire your for going to treatment. I’m 80% sure it’s against the law. I think it can be helpful to tell HR because they can enact a plan to be supportive and more understanding about their predicament. Good luck to your friend! Tell him we love him!
@SA1, I am thinking he should tell HR as well, in case he needs to take time off, and protect his job.
