Hey OP, I’m going thru the exact same thing after just about 7 months into my new role as a media planner so I completely understand. Right now, the path that I suggest taking is by seeking support outside of work like therapy - I start my session next week to help me deal with the anxiety and stress. It will definitely get better - just gotta fight thru!!
I think your current manager’s philosophy is right. As long as you hit the deadline, it’s ok that it takes a few rounds to get there.
Not everyone hits it on first blush. Nor do they hit it every time.
Even those that seemingly do have the same fears as you. And sometimes blow it too.
Don’t get into your head. Don’t worry about your old CDs.
Trust the process. Trust yourself.
And if you biff it, move past it and do better next round.
I was diagnosed with PTSD this year because of my toxic work environment. It has completely destroyed me. The physiological changes have been life altering. Hopefully not permanently. They didn’t care how many time I voiced my concern and expressed how their choices were directly hurting ME- individually. Singled out. They continued on as if it was fine until my heart almost exploded from the stress response.
So sorry you had to deal with this. What a horrible trap to be stuck between making a living in a rapidly declining job market, at the cost of being present in a place everything in your body is screaming to leave. 100% relatable.
You are going to be ok. Some old school creatives are a little abusive. I have NO IDEA why this was ever tolerated or even considered acceptable.
Don’t beat yourself up. We’re all faking till we make it. Some a-holes like your previous manager just dont have the courage to admit it.
I’ve also had my share of toxic managers. I always say the key difference between a good vs bad mgr is when there’s a problem, if their first impulse is to blame themselves or you. After having a bad one, the one at my next gig was kind and lighthearted. Therapy definitely taught me to take up space, and moments where I thought he might get upset, he would chuckle and not take things too seriously. In trauma terminology, those moments are called corrective emotional experiences. It gets better the older you get, and the more you can experience good bosses.
It’s easy to think that hard is bad and soft is good. But look closer, by being hard your previous manager was getting you to work smart rather than merely working hard. Working smart gets to the results faster so you get to have a work life balance. That’s the difference. Your current manager’s soft approach doesn’t actually give a toss about your work life balance. Think about it.
Sounds like a Dentsu Executive…
