I think this is a good time to check in on those who may be in need of help because they’ve been put on a performance improvement plan (PIP). In this economic/political climate, we’re going to see an uptick in PIPs.

If you're on pip, you're not surviving. PIP has one purpose - to exit you without getting sued
90% don’t make it.
Chief
So tell me: did you survive your pip?
I mean..if they got put on a PIP then they're underperformed. I think the best person to help them is themselves.
That's not always the case. Sometimes inexperienced managers that struggle to effectively articulate their thoughts are incapable of leading and mentoring and they will put their direct report on a PIP because they failed to communicate the goals, objectives and standards. I've also seen personality conflicts when unprofessional managers put their direct report on PIP because they don't engage in the unprofessional behavior with them.
I think the problem with PiPs in these situations is that if you are then asking a leader to miss their savings target/KPI to keep you.
It’s not impossible, but you need a very clear ROI case as to why you should stay vs the savings your removed salary would bring
Often that opportunity is not allowed. They exit you without the opportunity to make an ROI case.
Same in tech...
