I thought the functions of HR were going to be my strong suit, but I was wrong, and it took most of my career to realize. I really want to be fully immersed in just the hiring process because that's the way I'd like to interact with and help people. How should I adapt my skills and leadership style to succeed in hiring manager positions?

It's good you know that for sure. For starters, you should shift from broad strategy to a more hands-on, candidate-focused approach. Maybe use your time in HR to develop strong skills in interviewing, candidate assessment, and stakeholder communication, and build strong knowledge of your team’s specific needs and the roles you’re filling.

Are you able to talk to your manager about taking on more of those types of responsibilities? Let them know that's where your interest is and you'd like to grow in that specifically? That's where I would start, personally.

it's great that you realize it now! I feel like you're already at an advantage since you have HR experience and the transition to Hiring isn't a big leap.

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)
