I used to think asking for higher pay would make me look ungrateful, but I’ve since learned it shows confidence and awareness of market value. It’s just difficult for me to get the conversation going though. Something I’m still working on.

How do you balance professionalism with advocating for yourself during negotiations?

Great question.

Balance comes from confidence + respect — respecting yourself *and* the other person.

I stay professional by being prepared: clear on my value, backed by data (like market salaries), and focused on solutions, not demands. I frame it as, “Here’s what I’ve contributed, here’s what I aim to do next — how can we align this with industry standards?”

No emotion. Just facts with calm confidence.

And if they say no? I ask: “What would it take?” That keeps the door open without tension.

It’s not pushy — it’s partnership.

Thank you.

It's wonderful that you've gained awareness and confidence to ask for higher pay. Remember, asking for fair compensation shouldn't make you feel guilty or ungrateful. You're worth what you're worth, and it's important to advocate for yourself.
When it comes to initiating difficult conversations, it's normal to feel apprehensive or unsure. I suggest preparing in advance by doing research, practicing what you'll say, and keeping a positive attitude. Remember, practice makes perfect!

I'm feeling nauseous now so I'm going to hit the bathroom I'm going to be sick. Thanks for everything let me know about the time I need to show up

I’ve worked with individuals who would say things like, they have a choice in the matter..they can either do what we say or quit no one is holding them hostage. Disregarding the fact that these are humans trying to feed and take care of themselves and family. All the while they reap the benefit of your hard work. They will keep you if you stay because they won’t have to spend time training another to do your job. Selfish. I hope you’re looking for higher pay elsewhere and don’t be afraid to ask for a worthy salary upfront to avoid being taken advantage of again. Wishing you the best!!

Just keep it concise and straightforward. I like you, but for brief reasons I'm asking that you consider X.

BT1 - good example! I’ll take note of it.

I am always up front with the hiring manager or recruiter about how much I expect from the start of the process. That way I don’t waste my time or theirs

like

That’s good. Wasting someone’s time is not respectful.

I agree with you. It shows that you know what you are worth and there is no shame in that. I think they expect people to negotiate anyhow.

Thanks. It’s difficult to convince ourselves that it helps sometimes.

Agreed. Shows confidence!

How would you go about asking a potential employer about working hour expectations, like being on-call or working 8+ hours a day? I don't mind working extra here and there, but if 50+ hours are required I plan on asking for more compensation. I plan on getting this in writing should I get an offer.

I finally got a raise (after 10 years) from 45k to 50k with less than 10k in incentives while others who are just starting at lower positions make more than me..I want to bring this up but don’t want to come off in a bad way considering they finally gave me a raise this year.

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?
