I want to make a career switch.

I was laid off, and my partner can support me financially for at least 2 years. My salary is less important right now.

I worked in tax compliance since 2020, and I want to get some audit experience so that I can be more well-rounded for small business owners.

I want to start my own consulting practice to work with small business owners who are looking to expand their operations.

Do large firms typically allow CPAs to work on a contract/temporary basis?

If you want to be well rounded, work in private industry to learn how to do monthly Financials. That's way more helpful than audit - which is just glorified fact checking.

That makes sense, thanks

Not common, but firms do occasionally hire temporary people or seasonal employees. They typically hire from temp agencies though or hire people directly as seasonal (not ICs), so unless you were working with temp agency or hired as a seasonal employee, no. Firms are not not going to go negotiate independent contracts with random CPAs.

I don’t work in audit but I think audit experience can be relevant. Internal controls are an important part of any business being it small or large. Am I missing something?

I agree that internal financials are as important and if planning to do consulting for small businesses, experience with financial statements is needed.

We had evaluations and normally we have annual raises. I think my salary is under market value at $68k (plus OT) in Los Angeles (5 years of experience). I was told I am one of the top employees in the firm. When I asked about a raise, I was told “when you think about it at your level 5k to 10k doesn’t really matter it’s the long term goal that matters”.
