If you want to be well rounded, work in private industry to learn how to do monthly Financials. That's way more helpful than audit - which is just glorified fact checking.

Not common, but firms do occasionally hire temporary people or seasonal employees. They typically hire from temp agencies though or hire people directly as seasonal (not ICs), so unless you were working with temp agency or hired as a seasonal employee, no. Firms are not not going to go negotiate independent contracts with random CPAs.
I don’t work in audit but I think audit experience can be relevant. Internal controls are an important part of any business being it small or large. Am I missing something?
I agree that internal financials are as important and if planning to do consulting for small businesses, experience with financial statements is needed.
