I would say, it may not make a long term difference, however, I believe that the value I give the firm far outweighs that extra cost, and as I'm doing my best to grow more efficient and gain new skills annually, a $10k raise goes a long way to feeling appreciated and recognized for these efforts.
I would say 10k now matters to me more when I’m trying to buy a house and start a family in the near future. Even 100k won’t matter as much when my kids are off to college and leaving me just chilling.
Exactly , what about present value ! It definitely matters more now

If 5k-10k is no big deal, then cut me a check for that, partner.

I did say this to a partner once (I have a great relationship with them). He laughed and obviously I didn’t get a check but at least they stopped telling me how 5k or 10k is no big deal.
Well for one you are def under market. I make more as a staff auditor. If they aren't paying what you deserve and aren't open to paying more then leav...
I’d laugh. That’s rich coming from someone pulling in half a million plus a year. You’re way underpaid too. Seniors with less experience where I’m located make more than that and it’s nowhere near as expensive as LA.
I am currently at the interview process which is for 100k plus 5% signing bonus for a manger role. I am considering not even trying to get them to match it and just moving on, the way certain partners act is childish and most of the time they treat the firm as passive income , have no clue what’s going on for 90% of the time and then hit the panic button, or promote people that are known by staff for cutting out early or being hacks
If an equity partner truly responded this way, I would probably start looking for a new job. Anyone at this level suggesting that a top performing sr associate making $68k, that $5k-$10k “doesn’t really matter” doesn’t have a clear grasp on the economic realities of their workforce. I’m sure $5k-$10k is indeed immaterial to him/her, but certainly not for you, much less in a high COLA as LA. Absent further context, this just seems like a completely callous response on his/her part. It really makes you question whether tough decisions your firm may need to make in the current environment (for example RIF/layoffs) will be guided by grounded understanding of the needs and circumstances of the firm’s workforce.
Thank you. The same equity partner , one week previous to this conversation, told me there are no concerns and the firm is actually doing great, and partners are making more right now. Further, I was told I am going to assume the manager role on our biggest client which I work on as a senior, but it would be a good learning opportunity for me to manage a project , and maybe would be promoted in December or next summer. Which I know how this goes, I am going to now be a senior doing a manager’s job on a massive client and then be told “maybe in summer we will promote you”
Lowballing the partners salary there OP....
Probably right ughhh
You're super underpaid. As a senior 2 (4 yrs of experience) I was at $85k already. Then I left to private for an early manager promotion a few months later and got $105k plus 15% bonus with not even a full five years of experience.
Also, this is in LA and I'm in tax top give you more info. Good luck!
You are incredibly underpaid for your market. That is comparable to current Staff 2 pay in the NY Metro. I would expect a senior 3 to make at least 90k. If you are actually looking to negotiate, do some research and get market data on comparable positions.
Research is done, and interviews are underway Lol I’m tired of the games , I’ve seen a lot of talent walk out because the partners won’t pay them 5k more it’s very unfortunate
Leave* damn we can't edit comments?
Glad to hear it! Leave either way, even if they match the other offer, they'll keep pulling this crap
68k with 5 years in LA??? You are way underpaid
It’s really like 85k with OT but still underpaid
