How rare, and how much work are you willing to put in?
If endangered, the most important thing is making sure whatever you're buying came from a cultivated population, not the wild (where collection can easily deplete the wild population). That means you need to be confident in the origin, one way or another.
If you can buy it from a reputable nursery, that's a good start. Or if there's a cultivated variety that's obviously different from the wild type.
Or, you could try finding a community of people that are fans of that kind of plant and take conservation seriously, and see if the community has any vetted sources (either amongst themselves or commercially).
Failing any of those, safest not to buy. Random sellers on eBay/Amazon/Etsy/whatever can and will just lie about the origin and there's no way for you to vet their story.
An idea for seed specifically is Seed Saver Exchange -- people share seeds from plants they grow themselves, and you generally are only paying for postage, so there's little commercial incentive to lie about it. Selection is limited to what volunteers have chosen to share, so you may or may not find what you're looking for.
I never thought about this. Is this because you don't want it to die under your care? I have plants all over my home, but I don't exactly seek out the rare finds. I go with what I can afford and typically like prayer plants as well as pothos because they are easy to care for. What kind of rare plants are we talking here? I am so curious to know more.
Also curious about what kind of plants you currently have.
Bc they either have to come from overseas (so carbon footprint) in that ppl may have plucked a plant that is needed in that habitat, etc.
I don’t follow this as much anymore but I’m not sure how big of a thing “rare” plants are bc globalization and mass farming.

It's not ChatGPT, I spent like half an hour hunting down a good source and writing that reply. Glad you found it interesting!
I am glad you asked this OP because my sister is in the same boat as you. She got really nito plants and then started collecting the rare ones but like you was worried about the ethics of it all.
