Counsel position is always going to give you more flexibility and lead to better career progression and comp.
Can’t thank you and others on here enough for taking the time to give thoughtful responses. Thank you! Folks like you willing to teach is what makes this bowl awesome!
You’ll do compliance work as a Privacy Counsel too. That’s been my experience at least.
I started in a Privacy Program Manager (also had my license), and then transitioned over internally. Doing a lot of the same stuff, but learning a lot more than I did in my previous role.
My pleasure! Also, congratulations and best of luck! I hope you find where you belong!
I literally just made a decision between those two roles last month. I think it ultimately comes down to what you want to do and what is your career path. With my previous employer, I was doing contract drafting and negotiating and assisting the DPO in building the privacy program. The privacy counsel role I was offered only wanted me to do vendor contracts; it’s an extremely narrow work scope and entirely in my comfort zone. The role I ended up taking is a privacy compliance role that allows me to build the privacy program and something I could stamp my name on. I found the latter way more meaningful.
I had doubts too, especially giving up a JD role. But I’m a few weeks in my current position and I’m really loving it! I think a question you could ask yourself is which role would make you excited to get out of bed in the morning

To what degree do you understand and are able to use technology in a managerial position? Any experience?
Yes sir/ma’am. I have a Comp Science undergrad (Cybersecurity focus), consider myself tech literate and am adept in using DLP tools from a management perspective. Why do you ask?
